Small group
Well, after two summers of doing small groups, our ultra conservative Baptist church is finally taking the plunge. We are going to scrap our Sunday evening service and go to year round small groups. I have been a huge fan of this model for some time, but getting a traditional congregation to change tacticts is a challenege to say the least. I would be interested in anyone's experience with small groups good or bad. Suggestions of things that worked and things that bombed etc... And theological opposition?

Susanne and I led a small group when we were at Central Baptist in Round Rock. We didn't spend much time studying the bible, but we did get to know one another a lot better though the group.
At Hutto Baptist, we led a youth small group. We went through a study of different belief systems.
I am now teaching Sunday school here in Utah and I am finding this to be the most rewarding small group I've been in. I don’t really teach, but I do facilitate conversation and questions about the scriptures. It seems that, when given the chance, most people enjoy discussing the bible and how it applies to their lives today.
It seems that the hardest part about small groups is to get people to be themselves and not their "church selves". When this happens, time spent with a small group of believers is truly refreshing and it awakens the joy we have in one another.
I'm not talking about a 30 minute crying session or a hug fest, just Christians coming together to encourage and loving one another. Its amazing what this can do for a church and a community.
Our church bases their small groups around areas of service in the church. So you serve with the people you pray with. Makes sense. Makes it more difficult for people to hide behind a one-hour-a-week mask.
